“ Participant Perceptions of Learning To Play Guitar
In A Mobile Device Based Learning Environment (MDBLE): A Case Study of GitShed.com”
Aloha! My name is Peter Ayala. I am a graduate student at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa (UHM). A requirement of my Doctoral degree program is to conduct a research project.
The purpose of this project is to assess how mobile device users feel about learning to play basic guitar in an environment designed specifically for videoconference capable smartphones, phablets and tablet computers, and to improve the user satisfaction and effectiveness of the web-based instructional modules designed for mobile device based learning environments.
I am asking you to participate in this project because you are at least 18 years old and have access to an Internet-enabled mobile device.
Pre-Participation Interview and Guided Survey
Participants will attend an online “Guided Participant Selection Interview” and fill out Pre-Participation Surveys that are posted on the research site. It should take around 15-25 minutes to complete the guided participant selection interview and surveys.
Website
Participation will be completely online through the GitShed.com research site. You will use mobile device videoconferencing to attend Google Hangouts, and will complete research site surveys. The surveys are accessed here on the GitShed.com website and may appear on lesson, social media and survey pages. Completing these surveys will take between approximately 3 to 5 minutes.
Project Description – Activities and Time Commitment: The project is expected to last 4 to 8 weeks. If you decide to take part in this project, you will be asked to complete all video-based basic guitar lessons, to use the internal and external social media sites that support the learning community, to request videoconferencing assistance when needed, and to use videoconferencing, social media post, email and SMS messaging to ask questions or communicate with instructors and community members using only your Smartphone, Phablet or Tablet computer.
Twelve to twenty adults of any gender will be selected from the online volunteer pool to take part in this project. Selected participants will complete the 10 online lessons at their own pace. Participants will create and post self-assessment videos to the learning community to demonstrate content knowledge and skill atainment. In doing so, they will be personally identified through their image and social media. Providing consent means that you are aware that this is an online project and that your personally identifiable information will be available through the use of your image and social media.
When you sucessfully complete a lesson you will receive a recognition badge and points. Once a participant sucessfully completes each lesson their role changes from student to teacher for the completed lessons and they can approve the uploaded self-assesment videos of other learning community members. You will also receive points for visiting site pages, completing task, using social media, providing improvement suggestions and supporting other learners by reviewing their self-assessment videos and awarding them sucessful skill completion badges.
Lesson and Learning Experience Surveys
After completing each basic guitar lessons, using only your Smartphone, Phablet or Tablet computer you will be asked to complete a brief lesson survey and comments. Lesson surveys should take about 3-5 minutes to complete, however, there will be a few questions where you may want to take more time to write your answers.
The survey questions are mainly attitude scale and multiple-choice. Surveys are primarily on a ranking scale from 0 to 5 Stars, or a 0 to 9 scale (example: 0 being least favorable, 9 being most favorable) and multiple-choice questions.
Recorded videoconference interviews will begin after the three preparation lessons, and the first two basic guitar lessons have been completed.
Post-Participation Learning Experience Survey
After all the lessons have been completed there will be a “Self-Assesment of Learning” survey, a recorded post-participation videoconference interview and an online survey. The “Post-Participation Videoconference Interview and Survey” will ask attitudinal questions to gather feedback pertaining to your learning outcomes and learning experience.
Questions cover the ease of use and effectiveness of mobile videoconferencing and the GitShed.com mobile learning site and user experience as a whole. All surveys and survey questions are accessed on the GitShed.com research site. The post-participation videoconference interview and survey should take about 15-20 minutes to complete. However, there will be several opportunities to expand upon your answers with an open-ended narrative response.
A short debriefing interview will be conducted after completion of the post-lesson videoconference interview to gain further understanding of your experience.
Benefits and Risks: There will be no direct benefit to you for taking part in this project other than access to the learning community, “FREE” basic guitar lessons, site resources and gamification points and badges awarded for site usage and task completion.
Completing videoconference interviews and surveys will assist researchers in gaining your impression of the lessons, your suggestions for lesson improvements, and provide further insights into your mobile learning user experience. The findings from this project may help create a better understanding of the mobile device user learning experience, attitudes and development recommendations related to the mobile device based learning environment that is the subject of this research. By participating in this project you will be exposed to the risk associated with Internet and social media use.
Confidentiality and Privacy: Data collected for research purposes from voice, video, digital, image recordings, observation of private and public social media behavior, and your personal information, such as your name, email or IP address, are securely stored on a protected server hosted by GoDaddy and backed up to an external hard drive. Once the research and required holding period is completed, all recordings from this study will be destroyed.
Voluntary Participation: As stated earlier, you can freely choose to take part or to not take part in this research project. There will be no penalty or loss of benefits for either decision. If you do agree to participate, you can stop at any time.
